Post-Surgical Care for Spays and Neuters
Proper care after your pet's spay or neuter surgery is essential for a smooth recovery. Follow these instructions to help your pet heal and recover comfortably.
Creating a Comfortable Recovery Space
Recovery takes approximately 10 to 14 days. During this time, provide your pet with:
- A warm, comfortable space with soft bedding.
- Minimal distractions to keep them calm and relaxed.
- Their e-collar (cone) at all times to prevent licking or chewing the incision.
Pain Medication
To help with discomfort, your pet may have been sent home with medication:
- Rimadyl: An anti-inflammatory pain medication, typically given twice a day.
- Trazodone: Sometimes prescribed to keep active pets calm and prevent excessive movement.
Always follow your veterinarian’s dosage instructions.
Activity Restrictions
To prevent complications, limit your pet’s movement during recovery:
- No running, jumping, or climbing.
- No swimming – Moisture can cause bacterial infections around the incision.
Monitoring the Incision
Check your pet’s incision daily for signs of complications, such as:
- Blood seepage or excessive drainage.
- Foul odor from the incision site.
- Discoloration or signs of infection.
