Understanding Parasite Prevention for Pets with Jessica
Preventing heartworms, fleas, and ticks is essential for your pet’s health. Here’s an overview of the preventative medications available for dogs and cats.
Parasite Prevention for Dogs
For young puppies, we typically start with a month-to-month prevention plan using:
- Sentinel: Protects against heartworms.
- Credelio: Provides flea and tick prevention.
At six months of age, dogs can switch to:
- ProHeart 6: An injectable heartworm prevention that lasts six months.
- ProHeart 12: An annual version that lasts one full year.
Many pet owners prefer ProHeart 12 since it eliminates the need for monthly dosing.
For flea and tick prevention, we often pair ProHeart with:
- Bravecto: A chewable tablet given every three months.
This combination provides year-round protection with minimal effort.
Parasite Prevention for Cats
For cats, we recommend:
- Revolution: A topical medication that protects against heartworms and fleas.
Even indoor cats are at risk—mosquitoes can enter the home, and fleas can be brought inside. Revolution is applied monthly to keep them protected.
