How To Trim Your Dog's Nails at Home with Sabrina

Regular nail trimming is important for your dog’s comfort and mobility. Follow these steps to safely trim your dog's nails at home.

Choosing the Right Environment and Positioning Your Dog

Trim your dog's nails in a comfortable and familiar space, such as their bed or couch. A calm setting helps reduce anxiety!

  • With a helper: Have someone hold your dog upright, placing one arm under their belly and another around their head to keep them still.
  • Solo trimming: If alone, lay your dog on their side if they tolerate it.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Nail trimmers: Use pet-specific clippers or a nail grinder.
  • Quick stop powder (styptic powder): Stops bleeding if the nail is cut too short. Available at most pet stores.

How to Trim Your Dog's Nails

  1. Hold your dog’s paw firmly but gently.
  2. Trim small amounts at a time to avoid cutting too short.
  3. Watch for the quick (the sensitive inner part of the nail that can bleed).

How to Identify the Quick

  • Black nails: Look for a small black dot inside the nail. As the dot gets larger, you are getting close to the quick—stop trimming.
  • White nails: The quick is visible as a pink area inside the nail. Trim just before reaching it.

If the nail starts bleeding:

  • Apply styptic powder or a cornstarch alternative to stop the bleeding.
  • Apply gentle pressure for a few seconds.
  • Keep your dog calm and avoid further trimming until the bleeding stops.

When to Seek Professional Help

If your dog is extremely resistant to nail trimming or you are unsure about doing it yourself, consult your veterinarian or a professional groomer.
