Associate Veterinarian
 

Position Summary:


Seeking an associate veterinarian to join our team of talented doctors and technicians dedicated to
promoting the health and welfare of pets and their families through impassioned, advanced, and
individualized veterinary care. Communication skills and teamwork are vital to success in the hospital and
exam room. We are seeking a veterinary professional knowledgeable in medicine and skilled in surgery,
who is able through good communication and teamwork with staff, to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment
plan, then use the same skills to partner with pet parents in implementing these treatments. Experience in
ultrasound is desired, and experience in endoscopy is a plus.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Examine animals to detect and determine the nature of diseases or injuries.
  • Treat sick or injured patients by prescribing medication, dressing wounds, performing surgery, or other therapies.
  • Inoculate animals against various diseases.
  • Perform diagnostic tests including parasitology, hematology and urinalysis.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment, such as radiographic and ultrasound equipment, and interpret the resulting images.
  • Administer anesthetics, perform surgery, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery with the assistance of the technical team.
  • Follow discharge guidelines for hospitalized and post-surgery patients and treatment plan guidelines for clients to ensure proper patient treatment in the home environment including client follow up post hospitalization.
  • Answer client questions and provide education on various aspects of animal care and treatment.
  • Advise animal owners regarding sanitary measures, feeding, and general care necessary to promote health of their pets.
  • Call back/follow-up with clients; recommend medical progress visits when appropriate.
  • Humanely euthanize animals when it has been mutually agreed upon by the patient’s owner.
  • Document actions by completing forms, reports, logs and patient records.
  • Train and supervise team members who handle and care for animals; as needed.
  • Deal with clients and staff members in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to the healthcare team that will positively impact the level of care and service provided to the clients and patients of Highland Park Animal Hospital.
  • Attend monthly team meetings and in-house training

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Must possess strong computer skills in order to enter client information, request lab and diagnostic tests, and send and receive messages.
  • Good judgment in patient assessment, diagnostic and therapeutic planning; associate must be able to identify and communicate this knowledge to others when appropriate.
  • Medicine and Dentistry — Possess the knowledge needed to diagnose and treat injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Be committed to practicing the highest standard of medicine, and uphold the veterinary code of ethics.

Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Texas and be in good standing.
  • DEA license
  • Enthusiasm for continued learning and improvement
  • Available to work Saturdays
  • Able to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
  • Endure sitting, standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods
  • Take safety precautions for exposure to toxins, drugs, anesthesia and radiation
